It is very true that the ipad is taking over the place. It is referred in the wall street journal that the tablets are now more popular than the laptops. Laptop companies have been loosing money since the tablets have been made and introduced to this world. Steve said its way to early to judge if the tablets are taking over the market. Mr. Otellini thinks that the tablets will compelemt rather than take over the laptops. “IPad sales remain just a fraction of total portable computer sales, but industry executives expect the competition for consumer dollars to become more important next year, as more tablet options emerge” as written in he wall street journal by Mr. Clark.
I personally now use the ipad so much more than the laptop. I would only use a laptop if I really need to. Everything has an end; laptops are on its way. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying it is very close for an end, I am just saying its on its way. I remember when CD’s came out, people stopped using cassette. And now Ipods and MP3’s are out, people are using less and less CD’s. This is how the world is, products replace products. And most humans always want different and new things.

Think a little more deeply, Ghanam. Will tablets ever fully replace laptops? Can you see a future when companies assign a tablet to each employee in lieu of a laptop? It sounds silly now, but what new technologies/innovations in tablets might make that possible? Are laptop companies concerned, or are they looking to enter the tablet market as well?
ReplyDeleteI agree that the iPad and other tablet technologies are becoming increasingly popular in society. The eBook race has shaped up to be extremely interesting and has forced companies like Apple, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon to deliver much more than a simple eReader. These devices can all access the internet and play music in addition to books. The rapid evolution of technology often happens quickly and there are several examples of this. VHS tapes and CD's are giving way to DVD's, Blu Ray's and MP3's. I think that the tablet sector will increase but don't see the laptop ever going away. One area I could see dominating would be a "convertible" or hybrid that merged the tablet and the laptop. These are available today but aren't as popular due to the high cost and lack of advertising. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for things such as these. One could have argued that the iPad may initially struggle simply because it is essentially a giant iPhone, yet as we have seen that is not the case.
ReplyDeleteIt is no secret that the iPad is becoming increasingly popular and introducing consumers to a product that essentially combines products that they already own; iPhone, laptop, even iPods. This may be true, but I don't believe these products are even close to being on the way out. The iPad is simply a new product that is arousing so much excitement, but whether or not this activity will continue is unknown. Apple Inc. will have to innovate this product in so many ways in order to keep consumers happy and buying. Since the iPad is such a new product, there are too many unsatisfying characteristics for consumers to allow it to extinct any other products just yet. For example, the current model doesn't have a camera, USB sockets, or, perhaps most imporatntly, the ability to play Flash which is necessary for many internet games. Before other companies begin worrying, Apple will have to overcome these shortcomings in their product.
